What Peptide Treatments Will You Need as You Age?

What are the different Peptide treatments associated with aging?

We have been talking about peptides, the “pieces of proteins” that are the local communicators in our body that disappear with illness and age.  We have been talking about these peptides for the last few Healthcasts and now it is time to discuss which peptides we can use as treatment to keep us healthy as we age.

Remember that the most global communicators in our body are hormones, and they must be replaced first as the foundation of our anti-aging treatment.  If all of our symptoms are not improved, then we may need peptides to balance our bodies and provide the missing link to bring us back to health over the years.

Today we will discuss the five peptides that I use or will use in my practice. Most of them don’t have names, but numbers, and most of them can only be taken as a subcutaneous injection daily or more than once daily.  Only one that we will discuss is an RX you can get at a regular pharmacy.  The others must be obtained with a prescription at a compounding pharmacy, such as Promise Pharmacy, Tailormade Pharmacy, and University Pharmacy.

Bpc-157  –  GI Healer   Chronic Pain, Stomach Ulcers, Autoimmune Diseases, Heals Heart Damage And Joint Damage

BPC-157 is called the Body Protecting Compound.  It is a peptide and can be taken either orally or as an injection.  If you take this medication you must not eat carbs for 2 hours before your dose.

Indications for prescribing this peptide are primarily for chronic pain, muscle pain or injury and joint pain or injury as well as stomach ulcers, reflux, Ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and to heal the heart after MI or aneurism.  Often this peptide is given PO to help the healing process and it is helpful for weight loss and increase in muscle mass.  There are no side effects!

CJC 1295+ IPAMORELIN  –  Secretagogue increases GH

Is a peptide that stimulates the production of Growth Hormone from the pituitary gland.  It is called a secretagogue and has the advantage of increasing HGH and IGF-1 without the risks, cost or side effects of GH.  Because GH decreases as we age, but is stimulated by testosterone, the first step in treatment is Testosterone.  In time with age the GH begins to decrease again and with it aging accelerates.  It is at this time that CJC 1295 should be used to prevent the diseases of aging.

We use this for weight loss, energy, and to build muscle and burn fat

Any medication that stimulates the pituitary into any action can become less effective with time if it is given constantly, so this peptide should only be taken 5/7 days a week.

GHK-Cu  –  Collagen and esthetic peptide

GHK-cu is a peptide that stimulates the production of Collagen and specifically Type I collagen.  This peptide amplifies the results of laser, filler and LED esthetic treatments, making the treatments last longer and have better results. In our medical spa this will have an amazing effect on our treatments…you will get a lot more bang for your buck!

Medical issues that are affected by GHK-cu and improved or treated by it includes: wound healing, healing of burns, stimulating fibroblasts in the skin to make it tighter and it protects the skin through improved immunity from recurrent skin cancers and conditions, osteoporosis, COPD, metastatic colon cancer, and helps patients heal after radiation therapy.

In esthetics it tightens skin, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, thickens thin skin, improves texture and elasticity.

Thymosin a-1  –  Immune modulator

We have many patients with autoimmune diseases who improve with the testosterone pellet treatment.  For those who don’t improve completely, or for those people who have just finished chemotherapy and need immune stimulation we use Thymosn a-1.  This peptide improves T-cell function and takes stimulates the thymus (gland located behind the breast bone), which is the source of T-helper and T-killer cels.

Victoza®  –  Liguride/Saxenda  –  For Diabetes Pre-Diabetes, Weight Loss

Liguride is a peptide that is FDA approved and now is used for Diabetes and Weight loss.  It is a peptide that acts on many different organ systems in the body. First it works on the GI system. It causes the stomach to empty slower, which makes people feel less hungry and feel full longer.  In this way it makes people who genetically NEVER feel full, stop eating because they finally feel full. Second it also works on the liver to slow the production of glucagon, the hormone that stimulates the liver to dump sugar (glycogen), from the liver into the bloodstream which decreases insulin and therefore insulin resistance (Pre-diabetes).  Lastly Victoza limits hunger messages from the brain that cause snacking and overeating.

This peptide costs about $300/month from compounding pharmacies, but it costs $997/month!  The pharmaceutical companies have multiplied the price over 300%!

It is so expensive that I don’t recommend it to patients because it is too expensive except for the most desperate weight loss patients.  The name for Liguride® for weight loss is Saxenda® and it is three months in one injection pen, it costs $1,300/month!!!!  It is the same thing as 3 pens of Liguride but the drug company Novo Nordisk who laughs its way to the bank!

The difference between the drug itself is zero, but the use of the drug for diabetes is chronic or is used by diabetics for years.  The Saxenda is only used for weight loss for a short period of time and therefore the cost over a lifetime is lower.

I love this drug, because when I use it people get their diabetes AND their weight under control!

I learned about the drug for the first time in 2011 or 2012 when my partner daughter, Rachel Maupin Sullivan was in medical school.  One afternoon she called me all excited about this drug they were doing a study on and ALL of her patients lost considerable weight, and their Type II diabetes was under control with good blood sugars!  She asked me to try it on some of my patients and I did and low and behold it worked on my patients too!  Then, Novo Nordisk raised the price from $300/month which was exorbitant to $1,300 month and I stopped using it.  PS, the only side effect is reflux because of the slower emptying of the stomach.
